Well, sort of. Mormonism is a complex beast. They don’t technically worship Jesus, at least not in the way we understand the word. Technically, they believe that Jesus is exactly like every other human (that is, a spirit-child of God), who agreed to serve a particular role in revealing the nature of God and mankind to those of us on Earth. They believe that he then ascended to divinity, much like they believe God did. As such, they see Jesus as a revealer of the truth and the example set before us to emulate, but they don’t acknowledge Him as the god of this world. That is, by ascending, they believe He acquired His own kingdom, and there has His own spirit-children and is, therefore, the God of some alien world’s version of Mormonism. I don’t actually recall diving too deeply into discussion about their beliefs on the Holy Spirit, though.
Again, though, the point of my post wasn’t the particular classification of this one religion. We can talk all day about what the exact correct way to label Mormonism is, but the ultimate question is, does it matter? Will answering this question give anyone a deeper understanding of Christ? Will it bring Mormons back to the truth? I’ll gladly come back to this issue with you at some point, but let’s take a break from it for now and discuss, instead, how what we’ve learned about Mormons actually helps in outreach.
